Greetings. I am [http://dune2k.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=25 Edric O], a long-time member of the [http://dune2k.com/forum/ FED2k forums] and administrator of Dune Wiki. On the forums, I spend most of my time in the section dedicated to [http://dune2k.com/forum/index.php?board=34.0 Politics, Religion and Philosophy]. I am particularly known for my political views - I am an outspoken advocate of communism. I am also a Christian, and, in matters of ethical philosophy, a utilitarian. As far as my real-life profession is concerned, I am studying to become an economist.

More random facts: I side with [[House Ordos]] in the Dune games, I am very active on [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Wikipedia], and I love cats.

A protected page is one that only administrators can edit. In general, the Dune Wiki staff will attempt to keep the number of protected pages at a minimum, since free editing is the engine that makes all wikis work. However, pages falling under the following categories will most often be protected:

# The [[Main Page]].
# Articles dealing with official policy or guidelines.
# Standardized templates (e.g. [[Template:Disambig]]) which tend to be used on a large number of articles and have no need of editing in the forseeable future.
# Articles that are subject to repeated vandalism. These will be protected only temporarily.
# Articles of exceptionally good quality that cover their respective subjects in such a comprehensive manner that no further editing is necessary.

At the present time, administrators have discretion to decide which pages fall under the above categories. If this policy proves to be inadequate in the future, it can and will be changed.

= Selected quotes from the Orange Catholic Bible =
In the Dune Universe, many references are made to the Orange Catholic Bible, these are various quotes that illustrate the nature of the OCB, including how it pertains to the technophobia mindset, causing humans to become analytical devices. Also note that quotes may not be at the same chapter and verse they were in the source materials for the Orange Catholic Bible due to the text having been edited and condensed.

*''—and on the seventh day He rested.'' (Probably [[Exodus]])

*''Thou shall not suffer a witch to live.'' (Derived from: [[Exodus]] 22:18 In the Old Testament)

*''The meek shall inherit the universe.'' (Probably [[Psalms]] and quoted in [[Gospel]])

*''In the beginning was the word and the word was God.'' (Probably [[Gospel]])

*''From water does all life begin.'' (4:67 [[Kalima]])

*''Whether a thought is spoken or not it is a real thing and has powers of reality.'' (22 [[Kalima]])

*''And I beheld another beast coming up out of the sand; and he had two horns like a lamb, but his mouth was fanged and fiery as the dragon and his body shimmered and burned with great heat while it did hiss like a serpent.'' (Probably Arran and soon before the following quote. This could also be a translation from the [[Book of Revelation]] in the [[New Testament]].)

*''Thou didst divide the sand by thy strength; Thou breakest the heads of the dragons in the desert. Yea, I behold thee as a beast coming up from the dunes; thou hast the horns of the lamb, but thou speakest as the dragon.'' (Arran 11:4)

*''Law and duty are one; so be it. But remember these limitations—Thus are you never fully self-conscious. Thus are you always less than an individual.'' (61 Revelations)

*''Behold, O Man, you can create life. You can destroy life. But, lo, you have no choice but to experience life. And therein lies both your greatest strength and your greatest weakness.'' (Kimla Septima 5:3)

*''There are many degrees of sight, and many degrees of blindness... Think you of the fact that a deaf person cannot hear. Then, what deafness may we not all possess? What senses do we lack that we cannot see and cannot hear another world all around us? What is there around us that we cannot—''

*''Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.''

*''Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a man's mind.'' (Probably a play on the [[Decalogue]] in the [[Hebrew Bible]].)

*''Thou shalt not disfigure the soul.''

*''Only God can make living, sentient creatures.''

*''Any sin can be ascribed, at least in part, to a natural bad tendency that is an extenuating circumstance acceptable to God.''

*''Paradise on my right, Hell on my left and the Angel of Death behind.''

*''Blindness can take many forms other than the inability to see. Fanatics are often blinded in their thoughts. Leaders are often blinded in their hearts.''

*''You of fearful heart, be strong and fear not. Behold, your God will come with a vengeance; He will come and save you from the worshipers of machine. ''

=Selected quotes from the Commission of Ecumenical Translators’ Orange Catholic Bible Commentaries=
*''Men, finding no answers to the sunnan [the ten thousand religious questions from the Shari-ah] now apply their own reasoning. All men seek to be enlightened. Religion is but the most ancient and honorable way in which men have striven to make sense out of God's universe. Scientists seek the lawfulness of events. It is the task of Religion to fit man into this lawfulness.''

*''When law and religious duty are one, your selfdom encloses the universe.''

*''Religion often partakes of the myth of progress that shields us from the terrors of an uncertain future.''

*''The Universe is God's. It is one thing, a wholeness against which all separations may be identified. Transient life, even that self-aware and reasoning life which we call sentient, holds only fragile trusteeship on any portion of the wholeness.''

*''Much that was called religion has carried an unconscious attitude of hostility toward life. True religion must teach that life is filled with joys pleasing to the eye of God, that knowledge without action is empty. All men must see that the teaching of religion by rules and rote is largely a hoax. The proper teaching is recognized with ease. You can know it without fail because it awakens within you that sensation which tells you this is something you've always known.''
{{Wikipedia text (talk)|name=[[Spacing Guild]]|date=March 13, 2006}}

==History of the Guild of Navigators==

According to the Anderson/Herbert prequels, the Space Guild was created during the [[Butlerian Jihad]] by [[Norma Cevna]], a mathematical genius with great psychic power who allowed herself to mutate using the spice [[mélange]]. Cevna is depicted as so engulfed in her work that she pays no attention to the political and social ramifications of her new technology. The prequels hint that the Guild's eventual power-hunger was partly shaped by Cevna's son, who was a great (yet ruthless) businessman who took over after she mutated.

In 'Appendix A' of ''Dune'', Frank Herbert wrote that the Guild, along with the [[Bene Gesserit]] order, was highly responsible for the standardization of religion in the Dune universe - they promoted the adoption of the [[Orange Catholic Bible]] and offered protection to the dissenting theologians who created this book. Nonetheless, in the same appendix, Herbert held that the Guild members themselves were atheists, and only promoted this move to promote a stable societal order from which they could profit.

The Spacing Guild has a monopoly on imperial banking and interstellar travel: with the use of [[melange]], guild navigators are the only beings capable of piloting the massive Guild [[Heighliner]]s safely through space. The heightened awareness and prescience the spice grants allows the navigator to plot a safe course between the stars. Contrary to popular belief, the navigator does not himself 'fold' space, allowing a nearly instantaneous trip. The space-folding is accomplished by [[Holtzman effect|Holtzman]] drive units activated from the navigator's chamber.

The guild is apolitical (with exceptions, noted below), since their [[monopoly]] allows them to dictate terms to all parties that preserves the economy that supports them. As the only party able to transport goods in an interstellar economy, the Guild's highest concern is that commerce continue; for commerce to continue, the Guild must continue; for the Guild to continue, melange must be available. Ultimately, the Guild's only concern is that melange continue to be mined on [[Arrakis]].

Thus, the Guild holds veto power over all wars and political maneuvering. Military action is permitted, as long as the Guild is paid high rates to transport the troops, but major upsets in the political order of the universe must be approved by the Guild. In ''Dune'', [[Paul Atreides]] defeats the [[Shaddam Corrino IV|Emperor Shaddam IV]] in a battle on Arrakis, and demands first the emperor's daughter for a wife, which would make Paul heir to the throne, and second that the Emperor immediately step down in favour of his heir. The demands are coupled with a threat to destroy the spice. Since that would end all interstellar transit, the Guild sides with Paul, threatening to strand the Emperor and his troops on Arrakis if he doesn't accede.

[[Guild Navigator]]s are human, at the beginning; but their constant exposure to high levels of spice mutates them. Since melange is addictive, with death the unavoidable consequence of withdrawal, navigators make a one-way trip into their profession, spending their whole lives in a mobile tank in which they are constantly immersed in a cloud of spice. Navigators are made [[prescience|prescient]] by the spice (a requirement of being a pilot), and are sometimes utilized as such: In ''[[Dune Messiah]]'', a navigator named Edric takes part in a plot to assassinate the emperor, Paul Atreides. The presence of a prescient hides the activities of that person, and those around him, from other prescients; Edric's involvement is solely to protect the conspirators from Paul's prescient sight.

The Guild monopoly on space travel and transport and upon interstellar banking is taken as the beginning point of the Imperial Calendar.

In the fifth and sixth novels of the series, ''[[Heretics of Dune]]'' and ''[[Chapterhouse Dune]]'', which occur approximately 5000 years after the reign of Paul Atreides (3500 years of Leto II's reign and 1500 years following his down fall, plus or minus a few decades), the technocrats of [[Planet of Ix|Ix]] have developed a replacement for the Guild navigators, a technological solution that obviates the need for prescience to safely guide interstellar spaceships. Furthermore, the prescient rule of [[Leto Atreides II|Leto II]] that lasted 3,500 years has shown the universe the perils of prescience, namely that the entire universe can be locked into the vision of a single entity, giving that entity absolute power. The Guild, facing obsolescence and suspicion, couples itself with Ix in decline; Guild navigators continue to exist, but their importance in the universe is severely diminished.

Recalling comments made by Paul Atreides in ''[[Dune (novel)|Dune]]'', it was the Spacing Guild's obsession with the 'safe path' that led them 'ever into stagnation,' and brought on their eventual obsolescence.

'''Face Dancers''' are a type of human in [[Frank Herbert]]'s [[Dune universe]]. Servants of the [[Bene Tleilax]], Face Dancers are near-perfect mimics; their name is derived from their ability to change their appearance literally at will.

Originally, Face Dancers were Tleilaxu trained to mimic others using acting and makeup, enhanced by plastic surgery. As time went on, the Tleilaxu began to use [[genetic manipulation]] to enhance natural ability, so that Face Dancers could change height, increase and decrease apparent mass, change colouring and texture, and change facial features. This genetic manipulation continued to such an extent that Face Dancers could be considered a sub-species of humanity or even another species entirely.

In the history of the ''Dune'' universe, Face Dancers have been employed for a number of purposes. Initially, their principal use was entertainment--they served as comedians, impersonators, and actors. However, their identity-stealing skills made them highly useful as spies and assassins, and they were hired by the Great Houses in their continual political, financial, and military conflicts.

In time the Face Dancers became genetic [[eunuch]]s. They became sterile creatures, with full sentience but no sense of self and a genetically programmed loyalty to the Tleilaxu masters. They can be [[Mind control|controlled]] by being forced into a [[hypnosis|hypnotic]] state with some predefined sound (often a specific whistling noise).

Throughout most of the ''Dune'' timeline, only the [[Bene Gesserit]]-trained can detect a Face Dancer by sight; Face Dancers are liable to give away their identities, though, since they lack the memories of the people they replace.

In [[Dune Messiah]], the second book in the series, the plot is driven by a Tleilaxu attempt to undermine the Emperor [[Paul Atreides|Paul Muad'dib]] using a Face Dancer, in the hope the Tleilaxu can take control of the Imperium.

Face Dancers also play a role in [[God Emperor of Dune]], as they are often involved in largely ineffective battles with [[Leto Atreides II|Leto]]'s Fish Speaker police/army.

At the beginning of [[Heretics of Dune]], the Bene Tleilax feel ready to take control of the Imperium. They have achieved their long-term plan of developing Face Dancers who are perfect mimics, able to take mind prints of the people they imitate and possess all their memories. This leaves an ordinary person with no real way of detecting a replacement; the Tleilaxu believe that the Bene Gesserit cannot detect these new Face Dancers either. The Tleilaxu intend to take control of the other powers in the Imperium by replacing their leaders with Face Dancers. However, the Tleilaxu plan is ultimately ruined by its flaws. The Tleilaxu have never tested the Face Dancers over long periods independent of a master's control. It develops that, after playing their roles for too long, the new Face Dancers come to think of themselves as the people they have printed and forget their Tleilaxu origins. They effectively become the people they are mimicking, passing beyond the control of the Tleilaxu. Nor are the new Face Dancers undetectable to the Bene Gesserit. By the end of the novel, it looks as if the Bene Tleilax will be forced into an alliance with the Bene Gesserit.

In [[Chapterhouse Dune]], The Reverend Mother Dortujla describes being approached by a group of [[Futars]] and Handlers wishing to ally with the Bene Gesserit against the [[Honored Matres]]. Dortujla is struck with the impression that the Handlers are Face Dancers, but standard Bene Gesserit detection techniques are unable to confirm her suspicions. The novel also briefly introduces the mysterious Face Dancer couple [[Chapterhouse_Dune#Daniel_and_Marty|Daniel and Marty]], who are independent of the Tleilaxu and are following an unknown agenda of their own.

[http://en.wikipedia.org Wikipedia] has a number of good or even very good articles on Dune-related topics (alongside a number of bad ones). It is a useful idea to get Dune Wiki kick started by importing relevant text from wikipedia into our articles. Please note, however, that Dune Wiki is '''not''' a mere mirror of Dune-related wikipedia articles. When we copy text from wikipedia, we copy it for the purpose of improving upon it. Having said that, there are three ways to deal with Dune-related wikipedia material, depending on your evaluation of its quality:

== Bad quality wikipedia articles ==

Ignore them. If you find a jumbled, confusing, and/or largely inaccurate wikipedia entry, we are better off not taking anything from it into Dune Wiki.

== Moderate quality wikipedia articles ==

If you find a wikipedia article of moderate quality, you should copy it onto the Talk page of the corresponding Dune Wiki article, in order to make it available to our editors as a source of information. You should also place the following templates on the article itself and its talk page:

----

Template to place at the top of the article:

Replace ARTICLE_NAME with the name of the Dune Wiki article you are editing and TODAY'S DATE with the date when you are editing it.

Once you save the page, it will look like this:
{{Wikipedia text (main)|name=Example|date='''today'''}}

----

Template to place on the Talk page right above the wikipedia text:

'''<nowiki> {{Wikipedia text (talk)|name=[[ARTICLE_NAME]]|date=TODAY'S DATE}} </nowiki>'''

Replace ARTICLE_NAME with the name of the Dune Wiki article whose Talk page you are editing and TODAY'S DATE with the date when you are editing it.

Once you save the page, it will look like this:
{{Wikipedia text (talk)|name=[[Example]]|date='''today'''}}

== Good quality wikipedia articles ==

If you find a wikipedia article which you believe to be of high quality, you may consider copying its text into the corresponding Dune Wiki article directly. When doing so, you should place the template '''<nowiki> {{imported}} </nowiki>''' as the first line of the article in question. {{Wikipedia text (talk)|name=[[Fremen]]|date=March 13, 2006}}

The Fremen are the inhabitants of [[Arrakis]], also known as [[Arrakis|Dune]], the [[desert]] [[planet]] that is the sole source of the spice [[melange]] in the [[known universe]]. The Fremen came to Dune thousands of years earlier as the [[Zensunni]] Wanderers, a [[religious]] [[sect]] (as their name suggests, they are derived from [[Zen Buddhism]] and [[Sunni]] [[Muslims]]) in retreat; over time, surviving the incredibly harsh conditions of Dune bred them into the ultimate example of humans ''in extremis'': a people bred purely to survive. They took to calling themselves the Free Men of Dune, which was later shortened to Fremen.

==Customs==
===Culture===
The Fremen are organized into [[sietch]]es. Each sietch has a [[naib]], whose [[word]] is [[law]] unless someone is willing to challenge him for [[leadership]]. The Fremen practice [[polygamy]], apparently as a means of pinpointing [[male]] [[infertility]]. Each sietch has a [[sayyadina]], a [[Wisdom|wise]] [[woman]] who serves as the acolyte of a Fremen ''Reverend Mother'', comparable to a [[Bene Gesserit]] [[Reverend Mother (Dune)|Reverend Mother]] .

===Justice===
The Fremen system of [[justice]] always relies ultimately on [[trial by combat]]. The naib of the tribe is someone who killed the previous naib in single combat. Anyone may challenge another in a [[duel]] to the [[death]] over matters of [[etiquette]], [[law]], or [[honor|honour]]; the winner of the duel is responsible for the [[wife]], [[child]]ren, and certain [[possession]]s of the loser, as well as the right of the circumstances leading to the duel. Because a duel is fought without the water-retaining [[stillsuit]], the victor is entitled to a percentage of the [[deathstill]]-reclaimed water, to make up for the moisture sacrificed in the fight.

===Combat===
Fremen are some of the best hand to hand combatants in the universe. Their difficult upbringing and spartan existence ensure that only the strongest survive on Dune. Hand to hand combat has re-entered human conflict because of some very fundamental developments in technology. The personal body shield has rendered all forms of projectile weapons semi-obsolete. Energy weapons -"lasguns"-- react violently with a shield, creating an explosion comparable to sub-atomic [[nuclear fusion|fusion]], killing operator and shield wearer. Body shielding can be compromised by moving an edged weapon at a specific speed slow enough to penetrate the tuning of a shield. Shields are known to drive the fiercely territorial sandworms of Arrakis into a killing frenzy. They are not used on Arrakis's open regions with any frequency. Consequently, Fremen have an edge because their instincts do not compensate for the shield. Fremen use different archaic weapons to great effect (firearms, crossbows), but the most deadly and prized possession of a Fremen warrior is the crysknife- a personally tuned blade ground from the tooth of a sandworm. An untreated crysknife will disintegrate soon upon the death of its owner.

===Water Conservation===
The most notable custom of the Fremen is their [[Water_resources#Conservation|water conservation]]. Living in the desert with no natural sources of [[water]] has spurred the Fremen to build their society around the collection, storage, and conservative use of water.

====Collection====
Water is collected from the [[Celestial body | atmosphere]] in [[wind]]traps that condense the [[humidity]] and add it to the underground water store. Water can also be collected from dead [[animal]]s and [[person|people]] (especially outside wanderers) and processed in a [[deathstill]] which removes the water from the [[carcass]] for addition to the sietch water store. The Fremen that caused or discovered the death of the animal or person is then given a set of water[[Jewelry ring | rings]] whose markings denote a volume of water equal to the amount of water collected.

These rings are used as a form of [[currency]], and are [[Unit of account|backed]] by fixed volumes of water (analogous to the historical [[gold standard]]). They also have a profound significance in matters of birth, death and courtship ritual.

====Storage====
Each sietch has its own water store underground. This store can hold [[million]]s of deca[[litre|liters]] of water and is accounted for literally to the last [[drop]]. This store is used as a [[bank]] for all the water owned by members of the sietch through water rings, as well as for the sietch's own store of water for the eventual transformation of their planet into something other than desert.

====Conservation====
The Fremen spend all time out of their sietch in a [[stillsuit]], a special body-enclosing suit designed to collect and recycle all the [[moisture]] the body releases, from [[urine]], [[feces]] and [[sweat]], to the exhalation of [[water vapor]] in the [[breath]].

The special fabric is a micro-sandwich designed to dissipate heat and filter wastes while reclaiming moisture. The water is then held in catchpockets and made available to [[drink]] through a tube.

A Fremen in a well-kept suit can survive [[week]]s in the desert without any other source of water.

Because of their culture's focus on water conservation, it is generally considered a great sign of respect (though often interpreted otherwise) for a Fremen to [[spitting|spit]] before a person.

==Language==
The Fremen language, [[Chakobsa]], is loosely based on [[Arabic language|Arabic]].

==Mythology==

A significant part of the Fremen [[mythology]] was created by the [[Bene Gesserit]] [[Missionaria Protectiva]], through the manifestation of a [[Messiah]] legend. Diverse [[fail-safe]]s and Bene Gesserit beliefs were inserted into the Fremen culture, to allow a Bene Gesserit-trained adept to exploit them to her advantage.

{{Wikipedia text (talk)|name=[[House Corrino]]|date=March 13, 2006}}

Members of this Imperial House ruled as Emperors of the Known Universe from the time of the [[Butlerian Jihad]] until the defeat of the 81st Emperor of House Corrino, [[Padishah Emperor]] [[Shaddam IV]], by "Muad'dib" ([[Paul Atreides]]) and the [[Fremen]] approximately 10,000 years later. The Emperor had five daughters, all of them trained as Bene Gesserit (albeit in a somewhat superficially 'courtly' way), but only two play a part in the events of Dune. Wensicia was the mother of Farad'n, the future companion of Ghanima Atreides, and Irulan became the wife (in name only) of [[Paul Atreides]] who ousted the Emperor to assume the mantle of power himself.

House Corrino's ancestral planet was [[Salusa Secundus]], the seat of imperial power since the [[Butlerian Jihad]]. Due to an atomic aggression by a renegade House, House Corrino and the Golden Lion Throne moved to [[Kaitain (Dune)|Kaitain]]. The offending house is unknown, erased from history.

The harsh conditions of their homeworld encouraged the survival of the strong, and allowed the Corrinos to develop the universe's most-feared military units, the warrior-fanatic [[Sardaukar]], the means by which House Corrino controlled the Empire.

Following their exile to Salusa Secundus after being defeated by [[Paul Atreides]], the Corrinos gradually recovered strength. Farad'n Corrino, grandson of Shaddam IV and last hope for a new Corrino Emperor, made a bid for the throne (spurred on by his mother Princess Wensicia). The proposed return to glory for House Corrino did not succeed.

The remaining Atreides were Leto II and his sister Ghanima. Leto II had been rendered sterile by the sandworm binding process, so to continue the line, Leto II reached an agreement with the Corrino: Farad'n would never rule or marry Ghanima, but he would sire all future heirs to the throne, so all emperors after that point would be half-Atreides, half-Corrino. (Leto married his twin sister Ghanima only in name, for political power.)

Following the death of Leto II 3,500 years later, the Empire of a Million Worlds collapsed in The Scattering. There were no more Corrino Emperors, or Atreides emperors for that matter.

1,500 years after the Scattering, the legendary commander of the armies of the Bene Gesserit was [[Miles Teg]], a descendant of the Ghanima/Farad'n union.

===Further History===

The Legends of Dune prequel trilogy written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson - which many fans of the original series consider non-canon - about the [[Butlerian Jihad]] give further explanation to the origins of House Corrino.

House Corrino originated when Viceroy Faykan Butler, a relative of Serena Butler, managed to combine the titles of Viceroy and Grand Patriarch into one office - his - through much deft political maneuvering. In a speech given immediately after the [[Battle of Corrin]], the final battle of the Jihad, Faykan took much of the credit for the battle (which in fact was mainly organized and carried out by Supreme Bashar Vorian Atreides) and announced that he would change his name to Corrino, to reflect this bit of history.

The '''Landsraad''' was a fictional organisation in the [[Dune universe]] created by [[Frank Herbert]]. The Landsraad is the assembly of all the nobles in the Imperium. These nobles almost always come from great or minor houses.

== Meaning ==
The word ''Landsraad'' means literally the council (''raad'' or ''raed'' or ''rede'' (see [[Great Vowel Shift]]), from [[Middle English]]) of the lands (or of the landowning nobility in a [[feudalism|feudal]] system). However, it is unknown whether the term ''landsraad'' as such was ever used outside the Dune universe (See below). Herbert may have invented it for his novels. ''Landsraad'' or ''Landsråd'' is a modern Danish word, meaning ''regional council''. Indeed the word ''raad'', or similar words, exist in most modern Germanic languages (''raad'' in Dutch and Afrikaans, ''råd'' in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish and ''Rat'' in German) and almost universally means some sort of governing council. The Dutch and Afrikaans versions would be ''Landraad'' and the German one ''Landesrat''.

== Houses ==
Aside from the Imperial [[House Corrino]], the other noble houses including [[House Atreides]] and [[House Harkonnen]] do not individually approach the power of the Emperor and are in competition for fiefdoms, financial and political power, and Imperial favor. However, their representation in the Landsraad and their combined armed forces provide a check and balance against the power of House Corrino and the Emperor. The most important great houses in the Landsraad are:

* [[House Alexin]]
* [[House Atreides]]
* [[House Corrino]]
* [[House Ecaz]]
* [[House Fenring]]
* [[House Ginaz]]
* [[House Harkonnen]]
* [[House Kenola]]
* [[House Maros]]
* [[House Mikarrol]]
* [[House Moritani]]
* [[House Mutelli]]
* [[House Novebruns]]
* [[House Richese]]
* [[House Taligari]]
* [[House Vernius]]

At any time, there are around 100 great houses represented in the Landsraad, though this number could vary by a great deal.

== Power of the Landsraad ==
The Landsraad played a very important role in the political and economic power balance of the Empire, which was divided and shared between four organizations: [[CHOAM]], the [[Spacing Guild]], the Emperor, and the Landsraad.

The supreme military power of the Emperor through the [[sardaukar]], paired with his essentialy unlimited wealth, made him the principal power in the known universe. The Landsraad represented the unification of all the other houses, in fact against the power of the Emperor, creating a check against his power. Theoretically the power of all houses combined was a comparative force to the Emperor's. Both the Houses and the Emperor were in turn totally dependent on the Guild for interstellar travel, and interstellar commerce was monopolised by CHOAM.

This delicate balance of power served to prevent any particularly ambitious or destructive faction or individual from upsetting the stability of society; at least, for a time.

==Structure of the Landsraad==
The Landsraad, as a political body, predates the Corrino Imperium by approximately 2000 years. Its original structure was as a democratic body that existed to facilitate dispute resolution, and to aid in the regulation of international trade between what were largely independent governments. The body was overseen by a high council, which was decided by the drawing of lots, and preciding officers, who were elected by the body at large. Votes were determined according to the population spoken for by member governments. Meetings of the Landstraad occurred every 5 years, with sub-divisions meeting more frequently.

With the advent of the Old Empire, this structure was preserved, requiring only slight modification. The High council was initially elected by the body at large, and new members were thereafter co-opted internally. The total number of votes allocated to the Landsraad was 1000. 100 for the Imperial house, 100 for the Guild, 400 for the Houses Major, and 400 for the Houses Minor. The Imperial representative received its 100 votes in addition to the votes given to it as a House Major. The votes given to the Minor houses were appointed per spacial regions, or 'Circles' with a representative for each Circle. The votes assigned to Major houses were allocated by the Guild according to each houses' relative standing among its peers, as an 'Impartial Observer'. Vote allocations were posted a year before each session of the Landsraad, and could be appealed within a certain time period. Each House Major was entitled to no less than 1 vote, and no more than 10; however, this number could be increased through proxy-voting, which occurred frequently.

'''''Chapterhouse Dune''''' is a [[science fiction]] novel by [[Frank Herbert]], last in the series of six Dune novels. It is also known variously as '''''Chapterhouse: Dune''''', '''''Chapter House Dune''''' and '''''Chapter House: Dune'''''.

The [[Bene Gesserit]] still find themselves questioning the [[Golden Path]] of humanity set by the [[Leto Atreides II|God Emperor]]. Now they must survive the [[Honored Matres]], whose reckless conquest of the Old Empire threatens humanity's survival. The Sisters must reassess their timeless methods: does ultimate survival go beyond calculated manipulation? Is there greater purpose to life than consolidating power?

==Synopsis==
===Introduction===
This situation is desperate for the Bene Gesserit as they find themselves the targets of the [[Honored Matres]], whose conquest of the Old Empire is almost complete. The Matres are seeking to assimilate the technology and developed methods of the Bene Gesserit, their "last enemy in the million planets" (i.e. the Old Empire before the Scattering). Given the strength and record of the Matres, the Bene Gesserit need a plan.

In charge of this plan is Darwi Odrade, successor of Taraza. Her prescient visions show an unknown axeman stalking her--an adequate analogy to the Bene Gesserit situation.

The Bene Gesserit are also creating a new [[Arrakis|Dune]] on the planet Chapter House. [[Sheeana]]--in charge of the Worm project--expects a sandworm soon.

The Honored Matres conquest destroyed the [[Bene Tleilaxu]], who falsely assumed that their control of [[melange|spice]] production guaranteed their protection. The Matres, we come to see, are surprisingly impulsive in their use of violence. A single Tleilaxu Master remains, albeit in Bene Gesserit captivity. He yields a secret of the Tleilaxu: [[Ghola]] Production. The technology compromises Bene Gesserit ethics; the Tleilaxu method requires a human womb--turning women into "tanks" fit for Ghola production. The first ghola produced is that of [[Miles Teg]], the great military commander introduced in ''[[Heretics of Dune]]''.

The Bene Gesserit have four important prisoners on Chapter House, held in a [[no-ship]]: Ghola Miles Teg, Scytale, [[Duncan Idaho]] and [[Murbella]] (the Matre introduced in ''Heretics''). The Bene Gesserit considers them valuable keys to the present predicament. This mode of thinking--that people are tools fit for a task--makes the prisoners uncooperative, despite the shared threat of the Matres.

The Bene Gesserit intend to wring more secrets of the Tleilaxu from Scytale--namely, how to create spice from the axolotl tanks. Scytale bitterly regrets supplying the Bene Gesserit with ghola technology, but he must barter with them; he is their prisoner. Within Scytale's chest is a nullentropy tube, containing the cells of all Tleilaxu masters and various figures of the last few millennia, including many [[House Atreides|Atreides]]. Capable of recreating the Bene Tleilax, he retains his sense of destiny. Additionally, Scytale also wields the mind-controlling whistling language imprinted in all gholas; what ends could Duncan Idaho achieve for Scytale?

Duncan Idaho and Murbella are living together. The bond created by their mutual imprinting in ''Heretics'' has made them somewhat reluctant lovers. The Bene Gesserit have accepted Murbella as a novice and are training her to be a Sister, despite their belief that she intends to steal their secrets and escape back to the Honored Matres.

The Bene Gesserit wonder about Idaho's capabilities and potential; they suspect he remembers more than this ghola existence because they see signs of his being a [[mentat]], a talent not taught to him. They also wonder why [[Leto II]] consistently resurrected Duncan; is it his genetic potential? Indeed, he remembers his serial Ghola lives, which mystifies him. His mentat awareness tells him that the Bene Tleilaxu could not have accomplished this, implying that his awareness is linked beyond genetics.

===Body===
[[Lampadas]], a center for Bene Gesserit education, has fallen to the Honored Matres.

One Sister, [[Lucilla (Bene Gesserit)|Lucilla]], manages to escape the disaster of Lampadas. She carries the salvation of destroyed Lampadas: the shared-minds of the [[Reverend Mother (Dune)|Reverend Mothers]] of Lampadas. Unfortunately, Lucilla's ship is damaged by a mine and she makes a forced landing on [[Giedi Prime|Gammu]].

Lucilla seeks refuge with an underground group whom she knows will be sympathetic to the Bene Gesserit: [[Jews]]. Long ago, Jews went underground from the repeated pogroms against them, continuing to practice their religion in secret, under cover as "religious revivalists," to conceal their unbroken connection to ancient history. They were so successful that they have survived for 26,000 years while history believed them long since annihilated. The Bene Gesserit--with their memories of the past--were not deceived and have developed a relationship with the Jews.

The [[Rabbi]], trapped in the web of mutual obligation, gives Lucilla temporary sanctuary, but in order to save his organization he must deliver Lucilla to the Matres. To Lucilla's shock he reveals Rebecca, a "wild" Reverend Mother, ''ie'' a Reverend Mother who has gained her Other Memories without Bene Gesserit training. Lucilla shares with Rebecca, who promises to take the shared minds of Lampadas safely back to the sisterhood. Lucilla is then "betrayed" to the Honored Matres.

Back on Chapter House, Odrade's plans are reaching fruition. She confronts Duncan Idaho and forces him to admit that he is a mentat, proving he retains memories of many ghola lives. To some degree this is a relief to Duncan, as he no longer has to disguise his abilities, but he realizes this makes his position still more precarious.

Lucilla is taken before the Great Honored Matre, and to her surprise she is not killed outright. A game of words begins, and the Matre tries to persuade her to join the Honored Matres, preserving her life in exchange for Bene Gesserit secrets. It becomes known that the Matres dearly want to learn to modify their biochemistry as the Bene Gesserit do. It is speculated that the Matres were driven from the Scattering by an enemy who used biological weapons.

Meanwhile, Murbella collapses under the pressure of Bene Gesserit training and pregnancy--giving in to "word weapons" that the Bene Gesserit planted to undermine her earlier Honored Matre identity. Murbella realizes that she really admires and wants to be Bene Gesserit and sees her former matres as ignorant children. The words of her initiation are repeated with an emphasis not in the original.

[[Dortujla]], the head of a sisterhood keep on Buzzell, arrives on Chapter House reporting that Handlers and [[Futars]]--genetic creations similar to Tlielaxu masters and face-dancers--have offered alliance, though Dortujla's Mentat analysis suggests they intend dominance. She speculates that if the Handlers found Buzzell then Matres may too--smugglers would have sold their information indiscriminately. Why have the Honored Matres not already attacked? Odrade sees an opportunity and orders Dortujla to return to Buzzell with the Sisterhood's offer of surrender. Dortujla is to set up a meeting at Junction--the old [[Spacing Guild]] complex above Gammu--which the Matres control. Little to their knowledge, Miles Teg has intimate experience with Junction from his human life.

Lucilla's word battles continue for weeks, ending in her death when she reveals to [[Dama]] that although the Bene Gesserit know how to manipulate and control the populace, they practice and believe in democracy. Dama's desire to destroy the sisterhood is redoubled--they teach dangerous knowledge and believe in ridiculous ideas like democracy.

Odrade decides that the task of awakening Teg's human memory is best suited to Duncan Idaho, and so he and Murbella take over Teg's training. It is a job that Duncan excels at, but he is not satisfied with the traditional way of awakening a ghola, remembering the pain he went through to release his own memories.

Odrade and Tamalane tour Chapter House and visit to [[Sheeana]] to consider promotion. Arriving at the inland sea of Chapter House, Odrade is dismayed to see how small it has become. As she swims, she accepts the ruthlessness of some decisions, and returns to the shore with the decision to accelerate the terraforming by removing the last sea on the planet.

Arriving at Desert Watch station, Odrade confronts Sheeana as a test of her suitability for promotion. But Odrade is undermined by her lingering affection for Sheeana and so does not force the full truth out of her, but discovers that Duncan and Sheeana have been allied together for some time and have exchanged much information. Sheeana does not reveal that they have been considering the option of reawakening Teg's memory through imprinting, nor does Odrade discover that Sheeana has the keys to the no-ship prison of Duncan.

While Odrade is away, [[Bellonda]]--a chief advisor to Odrade--decides to get rid of Duncan Idaho, who she believes is too dangerous. However, she underestimates Duncan's capabilities; when she confronts him he protects himself with Teg, since Teg would never serve them after witnessing the murder of his teacher and friend. With his centuries of awareness--his serial lives--Duncan manipulates Bellonda by revealing his genius as a mentat. He chides the sisterhood by focusing on things that they refuse to face, arguing that their emergency plan of Scattering is flawed. Nobody sent to the Scattering has ever returned; ergo they are being trapped. Bellonda leaves realizing not only is Duncan too useful to kill, but that Odrade probably manipulated her into this precise situation. She releases the blocks on Duncan's information flow. "If you have a tool, use it properly," she admits to herself.

Odrade's moulding of Scytale continues apace. She points out to him that his dream of Scytale's great revival is fatally flawed, because the Tleilaxu who scattered are no longer true to his beliefs and indeed serve the Matres. Scytale is amazed and terrified when Sheeana arrives with a baby [[Sandworm (Dune)|sandworm]]. The Bene Gesserit now have their long term supply of spice, destroying Scytale's main bargaining card.

Teg is awakened by Sheeana using imprinting techniques at Duncan's suggestion. His mother had implanted in him a resistance to imprinting and so under Sheeana's sensual assault his old conditioning triggers and his memories are awakened. In his awakening he can't help but reveal the new physical abilities given to him by the T-Probe--his torture device in ''Heretics.'' She frees and appoints him again as Bashar of the military forces of the sisterhood for the assault on the Honored Matres.

Finally it is decided that Murbella is ready to become a Reverend Mother. Odrade relaxes the strictures, and for the first time ever a man--Duncan--is allowed to watch a spice ceremony. Duncan is filled with trepidation, firstly because he fears Murbella will not survive the ceremony, and secondly because he wonders whether she will still love him after going through such a life changing experience. Odrade watches with equal trepidation because Murbella is vital to her plan to deal with the Honored Matres and to reform the sisterhood. Odrade believes that the Bene Gesserit made a mistake in fearing emotion, and that in order to evolve the Bene Gesserit must learn to accept emotions. Murbella, Odrade is pleased to find, takes and survives the hard path to becoming a [[Reverend Mother (Dune)|Reverend Mother]].

Murbella goes through a manic phase after becoming a Reverend Mother, and her feelings for Duncan are not the same, a fact that worries Odrade as much as Duncan. Whether it is a temporary effect of the experience or a permanent one is unknown.

===Conclusion===
Odrade calls a Convocation--a meeting of all the Bene Gesserit--announcing her plan to attack the Honored Matres. She tells them that this attack will be led by Teg. She also announces candidates to succeed her as Mother Superior; she will share with Murbella and Sheeana before she leaves.

Odrade goes to meet the Great Honored Matre with Dortujla, Tamalane and Suipol (an acolyte). To Odrade's surprise Dama seems negotiative; Odrade wonders whether she was wise to have prearranged the attack. After a while she realizes that Dama intends no reasonable negotiation.

Under cover of Odrade's diplomacy, the Bene Gesserit forces under Teg attack Gammu with tremendous force. Teg uses his secret ability to see no-ships to secure control of the system. Survivors of the attack flee to Junction, and Teg follows them there and carries all with him. Victory for the Bene Gesserit seems inevitable. In the midst of this battle, the Jews including Rebecca with her precious memories take refuge with the Bene Gesserit fleet.

Logno--chief adviser to Dama--assassinates Dama with poison and assumes control of the Honored Matres. Her first act surprises Odrade greatly--she surrenders to Odrade. Teg arrives, and reports come in. Too late; Odrade and Teg realize they have fallen into a trap, and the Honored Matres use "the Weapon" and turn defeat into victory. Murbella saves as much of the Bene Gesserit force as she can and they begin to withdraw to Chapter House.

The potential failure of the Bene Gesserit attack was planned for by Odrade, who left Murbella instructions for a last desperate gamble. Murbella pilots a small craft down to the surface, announcing herself as an Honored Matre who has managed to escape the Bene Gesserit in the confusion with all their secrets. She arrives on the planet and immediately announces her intentions by killing an overeager Honored Matre with a blinding speed enhanced by Bene Gesserit training that makes her faster than any Honored Matre before her.

Murbella is taken to the Great Honored Matre and immediately declares herself hostile. Logno cannot help herself and attacks, Murbella disposes of her and some allies. Odrade is killed in the melee. Murbella shares with Odrade and takes charge of the Honored Matres, who are awed by her physical prowess.

Murbella's ascension to the leadership of the Honored Matres and, by necessity, the Bene Gesserit is not accepted as victory by all the Bene Gesserit. Some feel that she will suborn the spirit of the Bene Gesserit and many worry that her plan of merging the two orders is doomed to failure. Some then decide to escape, notably Sheeana who has a vision of her own. They ask Duncan and Teg whether they wish to join them and they flee Chapterhouse in the giant no-ship, taking also Scytale and the Jews.

Murbella recognised their plan at the last minute, but is powerless to stop them, realizing at the same time that Duncan's departure solves many problems for her.

==Analysis==
===A proper conclusion to the Dune saga?===
''Chapter House: Dune'' ends on a cliffhanger. What happens to the escaped ship? Does Murbella successfully manage to merge the Honored Matres and Bene Gesserit? What role will Scytale play in the future? What precisely are Duncan Idaho's new powers, or Teg's? How will Teg develop? Who chased the Honored Matres back to the old Empire and what will they do when they get to the Old Empire? What role will the Jews play? Who are the god-like characters in the book's last chapter?

These unanswered questions may be assuaged by some wisdom from [[Dune]]:
:''Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife—chopping off what's incomplete and saying: "Now, it's complete because it's ended here."''
::—from ''"Collected Sayings of Muad'Dib"'' by the [[Princess Irulan]]

Some readers speculate that Frank Herbert would end the series on a cliffhanger, expousing the philosophy that there is no stopping point to life and that all endings are new beginnings. The lives of our heroes don't end because a book ends, they go on in our imagination.

This ending also fits neatly into the grander scheme of the novels. The survival of humanity has been a question since the beginning of the series; by ''Chapter House: Dune'', the Honored Matres threaten to destroy the known universe, and they in turn appear to be fleeing from some unknown (and greater) power. But Herbert leaves the series with at least two locuses of hope for humanity. First, the warring Bene Gesserit and Honored Matres appear united under Murbella, who has been converted to Bene Gesserit ideals. Second, a small but significant group has set out on their own into the Scattering to develop a new society. Given the scope of Herbert's vision, this ending seems quite appropriate.

There have also been some hints in the Prelude, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Andersson, that the enemy that drove the Honored Matres back to the Old Empire was the remnants of the Thinking Machines. The Prelude books are, according to Brian, based on notes by Frank Herbert and discussions Brian had with his father. In "Butlerian Jihad" an [[evermind]] overseeing [[Giedi Prime]] sends 5000 deep-space probes, equipped with copies of the evermind, as seeds for new [[Syncronized Worlds]]. Shortly thereafter, human forces arrive and retake the planet, destroying the evermind copy before it was backed-up, thus removing any and all knowledge of the probe/seeds. One of the probes lands on Arrakis and is promptly swallowed by a sandworm attracted by the vibrations caused by its internal factories. The fate of the other 4999 are unknown. It can be postulated that, due to the hazardous nature of deep space and the travel times projected by the evermind, i.e. hundreds to thousands of years, the probes may have suffered a significant failure and attrition rate.

In "Battle of Corrin" The last evermind sends a copy of itself into deep space where it hopes to be able to rebuild the machine empire, and wait for the humans to arrive. It is unknown if the nascent Synchronized Worlds seeded by the probes intercept this broadcasted update. If they did, however, then the second machine empire would therefore be fully up to date on the course of the Butlerian Jihad. It is also stated by a Guildsman in "House Corrino", when they are tossed into deep space, due to activation of shields while folding space, that they must get away fast because there is an "ancient and future enemy" approaching. This could be interpreted as the Thinking machines, the evermind copy sent to establish the "new" empire. They fit in as humanity's ancient enemy, since the Butlerian Jihad, and humanity's future enemy, possibly the one that drove the Honored Matres back.

However, Brian Herbert states that Frank Herbert left notes for Dune 7, and when Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson have completed the prequels to Dune, they intend to work on Dune 7. For now, the only officially announced information about Dune 7 is that it will be published in two volumes named ''[[Hunters of Dune]]'' and ''[[Sandworms of Dune]]''. It is not known whether Frank Herbert would have wished this.

===Daniel and Marty===
One of the controversies of Chapterhouse Dune concerns Daniel and Marty, the elderly couple whom Duncan 'sees' in the net. They are [[Face dancers|Face Dancers]] who have somehow become able to break away from — or at least live independent of — a Tleilaxu Master; it also appears that they are the final model of Face Dancers that Waff mentioned in passing- Face Dancers who can not only take on the appearance of a person, but their very identity, memories, and skills. Little else is described about them, but much is speculated.
*At one level the old couple could be Frank Herbert and Beverly his wife. This is a provocative suggestion when it is remembered that Idaho saw them and their "net" and managed to evade them by dumping the memory banks of the no-ship. In this interpretation, on the very cusp of Frank Herbert's death his own creations "escaped" even the controlling prescience of the author to carve out new lives in the imaginations of readers.
*At another level, they reveal the true insignificance of the Old Empire, by revealing two "godlike" powers who seem beyond human concerns.
*It has also been speculated that they were members of the 'unmovable piece' that Duncan had visions of, and that they were using a new application of Holtzmann's equations to trap people in no-ships, like Duncan and co. or the Bene Gesserit sisters dispatched.
*Speculation: the enemy that drove the Honored Matres out are the face dancers, who have evolved into these 'godlike' figures.

The Honored Matres call the enemy who drove them back to the Old Empire/ Million Worlds the Ones With Many Faces making it seem almost certain that the enemies are Face Dancers. This is in contradiction to the theory that the thinking machines are the enemy. However that theory is suggested by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson making it appear they may decide to include them despite what the original intentions of Frank Herbert may have been.

{{Wikipedia text (talk)|name=[[House Atreides]]|date=March 7, 2006}}

House Atreides is a fictional noble family from Frank Herbert's Dune novels.

House Atreides is one of the great houses of the Imperium, the feudal interstellar empire that forms the backdrop to the Dune novels. This noble house hailing from the water planet of Caladan employs unlikely methods in its struggle to secure the spice of Arrakis: noble spirit, just ways and unfailing virtue. Ruling its homeworld Caladan for generations with justice and generosity, House Atreides has perfected a form of government that results in a well-organized society and a spiritually satisfied people. Little wonder that Caladan is the lush, prosperous paradise that it is. However, the House was also proficient in war; it had even developed an Atreides battle language (in the film version, this language is presented as a system of hand signals, whilst the book also includes a spoken language).

House Atreides is ruled by a duke. At first in the Dune novel the Duke is Leto Atreides. His concubine was the Bene Gesserit acolyte Jessica, who produced for him the son Paul Atreides.

Leto's son Paul Atreides is the main character during the first novels. He fights alongside the native Fremen in the war on Arrakis and finally becomes both the Fremen Messiah and Emperor of the known universe.

As Paul Atreides is lost in the desert twelve years later, his sister Alia inherits his title as the Duchess of Atreides and as Regent of Paul's empire until his children come of age. Eventually, Paul's son Leto II becomes Duke of House Atreides (to wit, "I am House Atreides"---Leto II), and God-Emperor of Dune.

Leto II had no heirs; however, Paul's only other child to survive to adulthood (a first child named Leto II was killed in infancy by a Sardaukar soldier), Leto II's twin sister Ghanima, mated with Prince Farad'n Corrino and produced a long bloodline, manipulated in no small part by Leto II. This resulted, 3,500 years later, in the birth of Siona Atreides, who possessed genes that made her invisible to prescient oracles. 1,500 years after this, another descendant of Siona Atreides was Miles Teg, commander of the military forces of the Bene Gesserit, who bore a remarkable resemblance to his ancestor Duke Leto I. Teg's daughter was Darwi Odrade, a Bene Gesserit sister that eventually became Mother Superior of the Bene Gesserit order.

===Political, Economic and Military power===

At the beginning of the prequel trilogy, Atreides power was capable but limited, it was secure on Caladan, had an uncommon reputation for honour and decency in politics. While Caladan produced sustainable resources (Pundi Rice) and some luxury items (Caladanian wines were the best wines in the known universe) it does not have the economic power of Ix or Arrakis (Under Harkonnen stewardship).

During the period of Duke Leto's rule, use of combination of Thufir Hawat, Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho training Atredies troops brought their soldiers to a quality approaching that of the Sardaukar, with the ability to expand the force to a size matching the Emperor's army.

Meanwhile Leto's actions as well as words throughout his reign move him into a very popular political position. While not having the economic strength of Corrino, Shaddam IV sees a rising threat to his power matched with his inability to produce a male heir (due to the manipulations of the Bene Gesserit to produce a power vacuum into which they would be able to move with their Messiah (to be born to Jessica's daughter and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen).

In an effort to counter the Atredies rise, an alliance between Harkonnen and Corrino is formed to eliminate House Atredies by trapping them on Arrakis (Dune). However realising the trap he is entering, Leto attempts to forge an alliance with the Fremen. Although Leto does not live to see his vision of "Desert Power" his son turns the Fremen into the greatest army the universe had seen to date. This army forms a new Jihad that spreads out across the universe establishing the Atreides rule of the Imperium (centred on Arrakis instead of Kaitain).

Leto II increased the control over the empire with his Fish Speaker army in order to repress humanity as part of the plan for his Golden Path.

While no longer a single entity the Shaitain descendents of Leto continue to influence humanity until the sterilisation of Arrakis by the Honored Matres. In spite of the death of all but one of these worms, the surviving part of humanity is in part descended from Siona Atreides and so while Atreides in name are a memory, their legacy will continue on as long as humanity.

===Relationship to Greek mythology===

House Atreides claims descent from King Agamemnon, a son of Atreus, in Greek mythology. The descendants of Atreus are called "Atreides" (plural "Atreidai", Latinized as "Atreidae") in the Greek language. This Royal House included many significant figures in Greek myth. Also the quasi symbol of the house in the first novel was an eagle.
