Etymologically, the term is from Hinduism, a religion with yogis puting an emphasis on control of the body. Prana is defined roughly as "flowing energy" of things, should it be humans or the universe. Bindu would roughly be defined as action. This concept of "flowing energy" is found in diverse ways in other cultures as well, including the Chinese with the Chi (or Ki) involved in Tai Chi, Chi Gong and other activities of body control endeared to martial artists.

The Dune Encyclopedia makes mention of "prana-musculature" and "bindu-nervature".
